The Pianist

Thomas Monckton & Circo Aereo

New Zealand / Finland

Physical Theatre

The pianist sits at the peak of high society entertainment. Impeccable in every aspect he glides graciously through life, never placing a foot out of step. He is, in a word: perfection personified. Or at least... that’s what he thinks.

The Pianist is a one man comedy show centered on, in, under, and around one of the most magnificent of all musical instruments, the grand piano.

Accompanying this elegant apparatus is the poised pianist himself. Only he is so focused on impressing everyone that before he realizes it, his show has transformed from the highbrow concert he hoped for into the spectacularly amusing catastrophe that is The Pianist. To salvage his somewhat unsalvageable dignity the pianist draws on his imagination and comes up with some rib-tickling and absurd results.

★★★★★ "Imaginative, inventive, and immaculately performed." Broadway Baby

★★★★★ "This is non-verbal physical theatre at its best. Succeeding on multiple levels, Monckton melds mime, clowning, circus and even magic to create a contemporary work that has huge appeal to audiences of all ages." TheatReview.org

★★★★ "Something special... his ability to hold our attention and make us laugh is a masterclass in clowning." The Scotsman
